 Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival today announced that American artist Tyler Mitchell (b. 1995) will be featured in a multi-faceted exhibition titled Cultural Turns that will include work on view at the CONTACT Gallery May 1 – June 30, 2022, as well as outdoor public installations at Toronto’s Metro Hall and on two downtown billboards.

Two new outdoor public art exhibitions celebrating New York City, The Flag Project and a lightbox exhibition featuring NYC street and subway photography of Jamel Shabazz,  will open at Rockefeller Center (located between 49th-50th Streets and 5th- 6th Avenues, Manhattan) on Saturday, March 27th. Both exhibitions are free, do not require tickets, and will be on display through Friday, April 30th.

Yesterday evening in New York City, Broadway's SLAVE PLAY and its creator, playwright Jeremy O. Harris hosted BLACK OUT during the show's previews. BLACK OUT dedicated the 804 seats of 45th Street's Golden Theatre to an audience of black identified artists, writers, activists, creatives, and students in celebration of the critically-acclaimed, Robert O'Hara directed play and in recognition of Broadway's rich, diverse, and fraught history with black work. The event was followed by a Talk Forward moderated by VULTURE Staff Writer Hunter Harris and Author Casey Gerald, during which playwright Jeremy O. Harris discussed the work, buzz, and questions around this play - as well as Broadway's history of work created by black artists.

The Shed Launches Open Call Commissioning Program May 30

Open Call, The Shed's commissioning and programming initiative for New York-based emerging artists, launches on Thursday, May 30, with new works by seven artists and collectives presented in The Griffin Theater over six weeks. The inaugural program continues June 19 through August 25 with a group show of 22 artists and collectives in Level 2 Gallery and presentations of new work by 15 artists and collectives in The Shed's open-air Plaza; a fourth group will be presented in 2020.

Today, the producers of The Heart of Rock and Roll, the electrifying new musical inspired by the music of Huey Lewis and The News, announced that they are moving forward with their four-week work session on Monday, February 25, as scheduled. The work session will culminate in three invitation-only presentations taking place on Thursday, March 21 and Friday, March 22. The work session is the first to move forward under the newly negotiated AEA agreement.

Theatre Communications Group (TCG), the national organization for theatre, is pleased to announce the recipients of the second and third rounds of the 2018 Edgerton Foundation New Play Awards. The awards, totaling $1,114,000 allow 27 productions extra time for the development and rehearsal of new plays with the entire creative team, hoping to extend the life of the world premiere play after its first run.

Developed specifically for New York City artists who have not yet had opportunities to create new work with full support from a large cultural institution, Open Call is integral to The Shed's vision: to develop and present the full spectrum of performing arts, visual arts, and pop culture, under one roof, for all audiences. Open Call debuts in The Shed's 2019 season, with works continuing to be presented into 2020.
